I’ve always wanted to explore different places in the UK. Much to my regret, I have only ever travelled through Yorkshire but now feel that it is time to change that. Full of contrasts and history, I thought I would take a look for dog friendly things to do in Yorkshire and plan a short break there.
Dog Friendly Yorkshire
Located in North East England, Yorkshire covers North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire. Within the historic county of Yorkshire, you can find many famous towns and cities. Yorkshire has a stunning coastline as well as the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors to explore. So let’s take a look at some dog friendly things to do in Yorkshire.
Coastal Walks
That is truly a stunning scene isn’t it? Yorkshire has over 90 miles of coastline stretching from Staithes in the north, down to Spurn Point. With views like this, who is going to want to miss out? If you want this view, head to Flamborough Head for a 3 mile circular walk. There’s plenty of parking and a great dog friendly cafe too – Headlands Family Restaurant & Cafe Bar.
However, there are plenty of other great coastal walks as well. Just remember to keep your dog on the lead so they don’t disappear over the cliffs! Generally, whether you want a shorter walk of 2 miles or one up to 10 miles, you will get some great coastal views.

Yorkshire Air Museum, York
Located south east of York is the Yorkshire Air Museum. A fantastic educational trip for the kids to enjoy, and dogs are welcome too!
There’s a chance to explore the Canberra Bomber and Jet Provost cockpits, or visit the control control that was used by the French in WW2. Visit the radio room or the Air Gunners room. There is so much for you to explore here on a day out.

North Yorkshire Water Park, Scarborough
Kids, both big and small, will love this option for a day out. There is just so much to do here. Try the aqua park, paddle boarding, sailing or fishing – and lots more besides.
Dogs are welcome too at the water park and there’s a 2.5k track around the site with great countryside views. Enjoy the quiet of the surroundings as you watch the fun on the lake from a distance.

Middleham Castle, Leyburn
Set on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales is the majestic Middleham Castle.
This was once the childhood home of Richard III and although now without its roof, there are still plenty of remains to explore.
There are stunning views of Wensleydale from the viewing platform, a replica of the Middleham Jewel and remains of the oven and horse mill in the castle grounds.

Mother Shipton’s Cave, Knaresborough
A day out for all the family at Mother Shipton’s Cave in Knaresborough. Along the River Nidd is one of England’s oldest visitor attractions telling the story of the prophetess and waters that turn objects to stone.
Take a look at the cave, wishing well, petrifying well as well as the museum to learn about the fascinating history of Mother Shipton. Enjoy Sir Henry Slingsby’s Long Walk around the remains of the Royal Forest of Knaresborough.
As it is in the centre of Knaresborough, take a stroll over the bridge to visit The Ugly Duckling Tearoom which welcomes dogs and their owners.

Heeley City Farm, Sheffield
Just off the A61, south of Sheffield, you will find Heeley City Farm. A community farm and rare breeds centre ranging from goats and pigs to sheep.
As well as the chance to visit the animals, there is a cafe, garden centre, wildlife gardens and eco-refurbed house. There is the chance to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables as well as eggs, from the garden centre. There is also a gift shop and the opportunity to pre-order bird boxes, tables and planters.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway
I’m sure that any Harry Potter fan will recognise Goathland Station as Hogsmeade Station from the first film. Those of us that are a little older, will recognise it as Aidensfield, from ITV’s Heartbeat.
The railway runs between Pickering and Whitby, with four stops in between. Purchase a day return ticket and hop on and off at the stations along the line.
There are some great walks to be done beside the railway track too. All details are on their very informative website. If you happen to go to Whitby, there is a great dog friendly cafe on the seafront – North Beach Cafe.

Castle Howard, York
A stunning looking stately home, Castle Howard is famous as the setting for Brideshead Revisited. Set in 1000 acres of parkland, there is plenty to explore with your dog.
Discover the Walled Garden, Woodland Garden and lakes before enjoying a break at one of the many cafes. Pay a visit to the farm shop to pick up a free bone for your dog to enjoy later when you’re relaxing back at your cottage.

Filey Bird Garden & Animal Park
A family run attraction with a mix of animals, exotic birds, gardens and nature. From meerkats through to wallabies, barn owls through to parakeets. The gardens here have something for everyone too. With secret gardens, sensory gardens, woodland trails and willow tunnel.
The 5 acre site is surrounded by Yorkshire countryside, making it a great place to relax in the peace with your dog, or tire the kids out on a fun packed visit.

Pontefract Castle
Known as “The Key to the North’, all that is left of Pontefract Castle are ruins. Don’t let that put you off. The castle is now a great place for a family adventure and your dog is welcome too.
With wide open places for your family to play in, ruins to explore, stories to hear and dungeons to visit there is plenty to do at the castle. There are always plenty of activities and workshops going on to keep the kids occupied too. Take a picnic and enjoy going back in time to the siege during the English Civil War.
